(Language in the Quran and Sunnah) Weekly meeting evening for the ACADEMION Cultural Platform
As part of the series of meetings presented by the ACADEMION Institute through the ACADEMION Cultural Platform, a non-profit platform that aims to spread knowledge and sciences through the institute's ambassadors and advisors, and through a variety of reading, audio, and visual materials, the platform presented an evening as part of a series of interactive evenings featuring a distinguished elite of intellectuals and pioneers of science in various fields, and the evening is in partnership with Elso Academy and sheds light on many important points that fall under the title "Language in the Quran and Sunnah" and the guest of the evening is the advisor and professor: Hashem bin Hamza Noor, Professor of Applied Linguistics "Acquisition of English as a Second Language", and the evening began at exactly ten o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, corresponding to the 7th of Safar in the year 1443 AH via WhatsApp, and the evening was presented by Dr. Mishal bin Yasin Al-Mahlawi, founder of the ACADEMION International Training Institute.
Dr. Noor began the evening by posing his questions about "Is there anyone who can think without using language? And is there anyone who can speak and communicate in a language without thinking?", and he mentioned that Allah, the Almighty, honored Adam, peace be upon him, as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah (When your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.') and in Surah Al-Alaq, His saying: (Read), and in His saying: (And We have certainly honored the Children of Adam) is a significant part for humans that Allah, the Almighty, honored them with this language.
Then Dr. Noor elaborated on the essence of language, stating that language is a favor, a gift, and a blessing from Allah, the Almighty, in which He honored this human being and elevated him above many creatures, and this language is not just speech but also communication and connection, construction and civilization, and achieving servitude to Allah, the Almighty, on earth. This language is an important part of honoring this human being, and the highest form of honor is language, and in His granting to humans the intellect to think, innovate, build, and achieve this servitude (And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.). This language is a form of duty for humans, and that duty comes through the messengers whom Allah sent to the servants, and He said: (And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed, in that are signs for those of knowledge.) The diversity of colors and languages among them is a very strong connection, and many theories have proven that these languages are numerous on the globe and may exceed (5000) living languages to date, some of which are spoken by only a few individuals, while others are spoken by millions, with English being the most widespread. There is a connection between the duty and the diversity in colors and languages and the achievement of this civilization, and that Allah, the Almighty, has granted this human being the feature by which he excels over other creatures by creating this language, through which he builds, as the messengers were sent in the tongue of this language, and civilization and the development of the earth can only be achieved through this language, as well as thinking and communication. Allah, the Almighty, sent the messengers to the people in their languages (And We did not send any messenger except with the language of his people to make clear [the message] to them. Then Allah leaves astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might and Wise.). And He said: (O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.) Allah, the Almighty, reminds people that this diversity is something natural and that this diversity is related to linguistic diversity with the difference in races so that familiarity and integration among humanity can occur.
Dr. Noor clarified that Allah, the Almighty, created in humans devices to acquire and attain this language, which humans are born with, namely: the auditory system, the mind or intellect, and the speech apparatus consisting of "vocal cords, nasal cavity, oral cavity, teeth, tongue, and the flexibility of the lips", and that language acquisition is an innate matter that is acquired and learned and increases over time.
Dr. Noor then pointed out that the Holy Quran speaks about language in many different contexts, and worshiping Allah, the Almighty, cannot be achieved except through knowledge, and knowledge cannot be achieved except through understanding, and understanding cannot be obtained except through language. Through language, the correct worship is performed as Allah, the Almighty, desires, and whoever wishes to learn a second language must learn the mother tongue strongly, for if the mother tongue is learned and acquired correctly and strongly, it will have a positive impact on learning the second language, and this leads us to discuss language in the noble prophetic Sunnah.
At the end of the evening, Dr. Noor touched on the language in children's lives, mentioning that the first five years of a child's life are among the most critical years "linguistically" and that it is good for the child to acquire English as a second language without undermining the importance of using proper Arabic in listening and later in reading. Dr. Noor then warned against linguistic pollution or anything that affects the acquisition of the mother tongue, referring to linguistic pollution as "what affects the acquisition of the mother tongue through distortion or incorrect pronunciation of the mother tongue by servants or drivers, for example." He also mentioned that one of the best ways to acquire the Arabic mother tongue is to train children to read the Holy Quran and perfect it, and before that, to listen to it and pay attention to it. The child will listen to correct pronunciation, and later the child will train on the correct articulation of letters, which will reflect on the development of the speaking ability and thus the correct recitation, leading to an expansion of understanding.
